Stampede strings are used to hold your hat on when it's windy. The term comes from the idea that you can hold your hat on in a stampede. Stampede strings are made of two lengths of braided horsehair each about 20 inches long, plus a 3 inch tassel on the bottom. They are joined together with a sliding knot to adjust under your chin for a tight fit. I use small metal cotter pins at the top to attach the stampede strings to the inside of your hat. The cotter pins are pushed up into the sweat band and then bent open to hold the stampede strings in place.
An 8 strand square braid is used to make the stampede strings. This allows for a number of different color combinations.
