In the last fifteen years, I have been blessed to know three wonderful horses who brought me such joy and transformed my life forever. Duffy, Beau and Shane were my horses, my teachers and my friends. They are missed beyond measure but I celebrate their lives in my heart.
Duffy, a beautiful chestnut Saddlebred rescue, led me on a journey into the true nature of horses and a way of life. Although I thought I had rescued him, he really rescued me. He was a natural healer with a lion’s heart who inspired many to create art, stories and poetry and to end the plight of the horse. And Duffy’s legacy will continue well beyond his lifetime.
Beau, a rescued Tennessee Walker, encouraged me to transcend my limitations and fears. Although his physical and emotional scars were deep, his brilliance radiated from his spirit. And at the end of his life, he generously gave his friends a sense of peace through his serene understanding and acceptance of death.
Shane, a rescued Saddlebred, could barely walk when he was adopted. This “hopeless case” recovered to become one of the most extraordinary athletes that I have ever known. After braving the Everglades on our daily adventures, he would return home with the aire of a champion. Shane was nothing less than a miracle and a beacon of hope for lost causes.
Thank you, my beloved friends. The gate is always open.
